Fern Arable
Fern Arable is an eight year old girl who saves a runt pig from being killed because he was the runt of a litter. She pleads with her father to spare the pigs life. John Arable decided to let his daughter raise the pig on a bottle to teach her what it is like to have to care for the runt of a litter. Fern cares for Wilber as she would a baby until her father announces that it is time for Wilber to be sold and leave their farm. We would not have a story if she had not saved Wilber from his untimely impending death.
Fern is able to sell Wilber to her uncle who lives just down the road within walking distance of the Arable place. She is able visit Wilber whenever she wants to. Fern's Uncle will not allow her to take Wilber out of his pen or go in with him. She sits in the barnyard on a milking stool and stays quite and listens to the animals.
