John Arable is Ferns father.  Out of compassion for the little pig he was going to kill it rather than let it starve to death.  Fern pleaded for Wilber's life.  Fern's father allowed her to bottle fed Wilber until he was old enough to eat on his own.  He lived on the farm longer than his larger brothers and sisters who were sold to other farmers.
