Templeton is a rat who lives in the barn with the other farm animals.  He is enlisted by Charlotte to help save Wilber’s life.  Templeton will not do anything unless there is something he will receive in return.  Motivated by greed and gluttony, Templeton only agrees to help save Wilber’s life so that there will be food left over from Wilber’s supper for him to eat during the winter months. Templeton is a key character and is deeply involved in the intricate plan weaved by Charlotte for saving Wilber's life.

The quote below best describes Templeton's character.

"The rat had not morals, no milk of rodent kindness, no compunctions, no higher feeling, no friendliness no anything" (white, 1952, p. 46).

Templeton

Templeton is an instrumental character in the book. He run's word finding errands for Charlotte. Templeton comes back with the word radiant from a soap advertisement for the web at the farm.  He also runs errands at the fair and comes back with the word humble. His last task was to retrieve Charlotte's egg sac for Wilber after being promised that he would have first dibs at Wilber's food from then on.
