Setting
The majority of the book takes place on the Zuckerman Farm. E. B. White lived on a farm in Maine and drew out the farm and its inhabitants while brain storming Charlotte’s Web. The Zuckerman farm started out as a drawing on a pocket size folded piece of typing paper. He then drew a three dimensional version of the farm with the barn and the pasture (Simms, 2011).
Time Period
The book does not mention the year in which the books story takes place. This could be an intentional omission by the author to keep the story timeless. If it was his plan it worked, children are still reading and falling in love with the story many years later.
The author grew up on a farm and lived on a farm in Maine as an adult. According to Simms (2011) there is still a swing that goes into the barn on his farm just like the swing mentioned in the story. So, even though the time and exact location is not mentioned in the storyline we can assume that's the barn. Charlotte's Web was created and staged on a farm in Maine. The author loved his farm and his animals. As they say you write best about the things you know, love, and understand.
